Things to Consider

Considering a divorce is difficult for most people, approaching consultation with a DCS attorney as an “information session” is a great way to start.  Be prepared to ask the hard questions. This can ease your decision process and make your next steps feel less stressful.

If you are moving forward with a divorce, know that divorce is a process, within which a good attorney will give you options.  This is an important time to consider your own wellbeing, so that you can make reasoned decisions.  Take self-care measures; get sleep, exercise, find support from friends or psychological professionals, get outdoors a bit each day, and most of all, trust that things will get better.

Should I bring documents to my consultation?

It’s not necessary to bring any document to your consultation, but if you have access to them without causing alarm or conflict, they can be helpful.

  • List of general questions

  • Prenuptial agreements

  • Any prior divorce decrees

  • Financial documents

  • Income documentation / paystubs, tax returns

  • List of assets

Items that may be helpful (but are not required) include:

  • List of debts

  • List of personal property

  • Any written agreements

  • Employment history of the spouses (vitae, resume)

  • Filed pleadings and court orders

Consider Collaborative Divorce

Process matters.  At your consultation with a DCS attorney, consider asking about collaborative law with one of our collaboratively-trained attorneys.
